Introduction: fayemi shakur (an excerpt)

“I am always moved by the labor of Black women feminists, artists, and writers.  Returning to A Womb of Violet, I seek to blend visual art practices, poetry and prose with intentionality, to document and hold these stories softly with care.  I am moved by the value of our lived experiences, by our inner worlds that need to be nurtured, by our activism that uplifts our communities, by sisterhood and who we are. “

Foreword: Dr. Salamishah Tillet (an excerpt)

“Inspired by earlier Black feminist anthologies, such as Toni Cade Bambara’s The Black Woman (1970), Barbara Smith’s Home Girls (1983), and Beverly Guy-Sheftall's Words of Fire (1995), fayemi wanted that first iteration of A Womb of Violet to reveal on page what it was in spirit: a safe space for Black women to come together and create.”

A Womb of Violet Vol. II: Blackness, Resistance, and Being was made possible thanks to generous contributions by
